WHAT KIND OF A LEADER ARE YOU?

Kanyua is six months old at Maendeleo Company as the manager. For the past three months he has been coming to work early and delegated roles and taken part in doing them. Employees at maendeleo have been very happy to have a boss who is caring and understanding one who takes an active role in their daily activities.

Every board meeting everyone is given a chance to give views and opinion on what should be done to improve the company. Employees have been airing their problems freely and have had support when needed.

In his fourth month Kanyua has been arriving late to work, drunk and unkempt .He has been scolding the employees and humiliating them even before guests.

Anytime he enters the office everyone is quiet and goes to their spots and they become busy doing nothing not because they were but because the boss has arrived.

Employees no longer air their complains because their words will be used against them .They fear being judged for saying the truth. Within a month the performance of the company has gone down because the leader is not supporting unity of purpose.

Maendeleo company has lost several of its company workers and even their best customers too.

It is until recently employees decided to find a way of saving the company and called for a meeting with Kinyua. They talked their issues and resolved their matter. Kinyua as a leader has been dealing with problems at home and led to him misbehaving at work.

Many leaders have acted like Kinyua at times not because they have problems at home but their bossy nature has led to the downfall of the companies. Social life should not be included to your professional life.

A good leader should balance himself both at home and at work so that they are able to lead well by example. They should put their employees first and work toward making their vision a reality.

Leaders are backbones of a successful organization. They should exhibit good character and be able to handle matters without favor. They should be neutral all the time.

Do not fake your character so that you can fit in because with time all that will fade too. Be you, be original so that your juniors can understand who you are and be able to work well with you.

A good leader will ensure there is harmony at the work place. Listen to the complains made and be ready to handle the issues .Being a leader means you are a mirror and you should reflect good.

Allow your employees socialize and share knowledge .Set days for company retreats to allow the staff to refresh. This will motivate them and will show that you care and respect their work-life balance

Empower your employees and support their talents because it will motivate them and the company will grow because the employees are growing too.

Many a times Kanyua has been releasing workers so late and giving them unrealistic workloads. Most of the employees would be sleeping at work and doing so little because most of the day they spend sleeping because they are fatigued .From this we learn that setting unrealistic goals for your employees would work yes but be reasonable and give work that can be done in a day and allow the mind to refresh for tomorrows job. Rome was not built on a single day remember!

When employees are frustrated they will not be able to perform well as you expect and when they do well recognize and appreciate them this will make them realize that they are being noticed and their work is being noticed.

As a leader have self discipline, be outgoing, foster communication between workers, be humble, courageous, build a positive work environment and be a caring manager.
